BusinessInterviews.com: Why do you think that we’ve seen such a large increase in food allergies over the last decade?

Chuck: Over 15 million people suffer from food allergies. Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of an allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. While scientists have many theories such as the overuse of antibiotics, or the “hygiene hypothesis”, a definitive cause remains elusive.

BusinessInterviews.com: How are you helping those suffering with food allergies combat the various challenges they face on a daily basis?

Chuck: First of all, for both children and adults, a food allergy diagnosis is a very overwhelming and disconcerting experience. Our goal is to lessen this anxiety by offering a variety of familiar foods and meal solutions that have been specifically developed to meet these special nutritional needs. We also simplify the tedious label reading process and instill trust by using a handy icon system on the front of our packaging. Our unique allergen alert system clearly calls out which of the top 8 allergens is absent from the product.

BusinessInterviews.com: Can you talk about how Ian’s is pioneering an entirely new segment in the food industry called Allergy-Friendly/Gluten-Free?

Chuck: Ian’s was founded by a father who wanted healthier foods available to his son and became one of the first to offer gluten free products. We have expanded this vision to include allergy-friendly products not only for kids, but for the whole family. While most companies have developed snacks, bars, cookies, crackers and breads, Ian’s has always focused on “center of the plate” protein, which is important in a well-balanced diet.

BusinessInterviews.com: Being a pioneer can be hard. Can you talk about some of the challenges you’ve encountered while trying to establish an entirely new segment within the food industry?

Chuck: Educating the trade and consumers! Ian’s was one of the first companies to introduce the term “allergy friendly”, as other companies preferred the claim “allergy free”. Since nearly any food is capable of causing an allergic reaction, “allergy free” products do not exist. While the FDA has identified 8 allergens, that only covers 90 percent of the reactions. In fact Canada has 11, with the addition of mustard, sesame and sulfites. Therefore, even before we talk about our products, it is critical to educate our audience.

BusinessInterviews.com: Can you elaborate on the significance of being the first company to develop Child Nutrition Compliant (new Whole Grain 2014 Regulations, USDA‘s Food and Nutrition Service) whole grain, gluten-free products for schools?

Chuck: Gluten free does not have to be Grain Free!! Many consumers with celiac disease are susceptible to a deficiency in B vitamins and other nutrients commonly found in products made with enriched flours. Historically, gluten-free products have been formulated with unenriched, refined grains. Ian’s proprietary whole grain breading system helps to fill a nutritional gap in the gluten-free lifestyle.

Chuck: Every day, the Ian’s team works hard to maintain the compassion and “trust” of the consumer, especially when most of them, including both children and adults, have special dietary needs. An innovative spirit and the use of high-quality ingredients make the brand appealing to both individuals and families.
