Edwin Miller: I started 9Lenses in order to address the biggest disconnection in organizations – the one between the decision-maker(s) and the stakeholders, especially employees. By adding a layer of stakeholder perspectives to all the data that is now available to decision-makers, executives and consultants are able to make smarter decisions.

Edwin Miller: When you have a unique idea and a go-to market that is sizable, you then automatically begin to attract great talent. The brightest people want to solve big problems, and as an entrepreneur you need to have a big vision and be able to article this vision to motivate the talent you attract. 9Lenses has been fortunate to attract bright and passionate people. This talent has shaped up what 9Lenses is today, and will continue to make all the difference to the success and failure of 9Lenses.

Edwin Miller: Our customers have been able to use 9Lenses in creative ways to improve their business bottom-line. Every time our customers use 9Lenses, it is a win for us! Apart from that, it is exciting time for 9Lenses – in August alone we’ve signed two top-tier consulting firms. We have also signed on yet another global research company in the same month.

BusinessInterviews.com:  What’s the most exciting thing on the horizon for 9Lenses?

Edwin Miller: The market today truly understands that there is a business problem! Two years and even a year back, the concept of 9Lenses was a lot more abstract for our target market to comprehend. People kept mixing us up with automated surveys – something we just aren’t if you consider the depth of information that 9Lenses is able to give its users.

Another exciting factor is the fact that Insight-as-a-Service is a growing industry today.

BusinessInterviews.com:  What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner and how have you met that challenge?

Edwin Miller: Being a founder and the CEO can sometimes be at loggerheads. The founder side of me is more creative and spends a lot of time thinking about the future and creating a big vision. As a CEO, I tend to focus more about making business sense and the execution part. A lot of times, execution needs to catch up with the vision. I strive hard to strike a balance between the founder side of my personality and the CEO side.

BusinessInterviews.com:  Where do you envision 9Lenses in 5 years, 10 years, and 20 years?

Edwin Miller: Five years down the line, there really shouldn’t be a Fortune 500 or a consultancy not using our platform! Additionally, as the Insights-as-a-Service industry grows, it will only fuel 9Lenses’ long-term success. I also see companies having a much better understanding of how to engage with their employees and other stakeholders because of 9Lenses.

BusinessInterviews.com:  Have you had any mentors or role models that have influenced you? Describe the impact.

Edwin Miller: I am fortunate to have had many mentors who have guided me when I wanted to achieve something and was in need of guidance. A chairman of a board of a public company helped me become a much better writer and that helped me author my two books. John Burton – a friend and a mentor who has this incredibly keen business mind has offered advice and guidance along the way.

BusinessInterviews.com:  Do you consider yourself successful and by what means do you measure success?

Edwin Miller: I do consider myself successful, but I make sure to keep raising the bar when it comes to measuring success. To get a holistic view of success I evaluate my physical, mental, and spiritual health.

BusinessInterviews.com:  How do your competitors view 9Lenses?

Edwin Miller: A year ago, some companies who viewed us as competition thought we did what we did, but today, it’s like oranges and apples! 9Lenses is up against broken manual processes in the business world. So our real competitors are professionals who prefer manual discovery.

BusinessInterviews.com:  What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs and business owners? What do you wish someone told you?

Edwin Miller: Understand your market timing really well – this is crucial for any business to succeed. The way you think about the 4P’s (price, promotion, place, and product) will vary depending on whether you are an early disruptor in the market or are entering a more mature market.

BusinessInterviews.com:  What’s the biggest risk that you’ve ever taken and how did it turn out?

Edwin Miller: Starting 9Lenses – I had a good brand as an operating CEO, a hired gun if you may. To leave behind that sort of credibility and a build a business from scratch was risky for sure. I think it turned out great though. Every day in this startup is a new adventure, and the kind of people that I work with continue to inspire me and motivate me to reach for bigger and better goals.
