“The Naked Truth About Breast Implants”

Dr. Susan Kolb, board certified in plastic surgery in 1985, and is also one of the founding diplomats of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (2000). Dr. Kolb published “The Naked Truth About Breast Implants” in 2009 when the center became the expert facility for surgical and medical treatment of breast implant illness. She has also been featured on The Today Show and in People Magazine, as well as on CNN’s Talkback Live.

Plastikos Plastic & Reconstruction Surgery and Plastikos Surgery Center were founded in 1995 to help patients with difficult problems find answers. Several years later, Millennium Healthcare, an integrated holistic medical practice, was added along with Avatar Cancer Center, to help patients with cancer, breast implant toxicity, patients with chemical toxicity from burns and work exposure, and difficult hand injuries.

Plastikos is the only center of its kind in the United States that combines traditional and integrative medicine with both medical and surgical treatment in one location.

MO: What inspired you to launch the Plastikos Surgery Center and can you talk about some of the challenges of creating a one of a kind facility?

Dr. Susan Kolb: Plastikos Surgery Center was given to me in a vision in 1990 in Sedona, Arizonia. I was told it would be for the “disasters”. The building of the center including the challenges is outlined in a paper that I wrote at the request of the founder of the American Holistic Health Association and is entitled Twenty-First Century Healthcare: The Integrated Medical Center located at www.plastikos.com.

MO: Energy healing, spiritual medicine and plastic surgery are not usually used in the same sentence. Can you talk about what initially attracted you to alternative therapies and inspired you to use them alongside the practice of plastic surgery?

Dr. Susan Kolb: Patients coming to the center for treatment had difficult problems not treated with surgery alone, so I interviewed holistic doctors on my radio show to gain knowledge needed to treat them. Then I discovered functional medicine which made sense to me as a body of medicine that could be used in these patients with challenging health problems.

MO: What are some trends in the medical industry that you’re excited about?

Dr. Susan Kolb: Functional medicine which looks at biological pathways that can be altered. Biophysics which treats the energy field with less side effects than biochemical medicine. And spiritual medicine which really is exciting as a way to alter the physical, emotional and mental aspects to see rapid improvement of chronic illness.

MO: What advice would to give to a woman contemplating breast implants?

Dr. Susan Kolb: Educate yourself by reading The Naked Truth About Breast Implants. Be prepared to be able to afford future surgeries if needed (usually every 8 to 10 years).

MO: Have you had any mentors during the course of your career or anyone that you’ve found particularly inspiring?

Dr. Susan Kolb: Dr. Norm Shealy, the neurosurgeon who founded The American Holistic Medical Associations and is a pioneer in biophysics and spiritual medicine along with Carolyn Myss.

MO: What’s the most exciting thing on the horizon for you personally or professionally?

Dr. Susan Kolb: The establishment of a nonprofit to help women with the cost of explantation if they cannot afford surgery or do not have insurance coverage for explantation. Further research in spiritual medicine and biophysics for difficult diseases.
