MO: What inspired you to launch your business?

Tim: AlertBoot is my second technology business, and in the case of both my businesses, I identified areas where new or improved technology could help ease the pain of cumbersome business processes. In the case of AlertBoot, I discovered the need for managed security services while working on some government contracts.

I witnessed the difficulty federal agencies were having with deploying and managing disk encryption, and I knew we could leverage a lot of SaaS business experience to bring this technology to the cloud as a managed service. In many cases the federal agencies would spend millions on encryption licenses, but they didn’t have the time or budget to deploy endpoint encryption so the costly software went unused.

MO: What issue does your core product help solve?

Tim: When AlertBoot first launched in 2010, our focus was on managing disk encryption primarily for SMB’s. The thinking at the time was that large enterprise wouldn’t trust such security needs to an outside service provider, but large enterprises were amongst our first customers.

AlertBoot makes it easy to deploy and manage disk encryption along with exemplary support and a business friendly management console to further simplify the whole encryption experience. Large customers understood the pains associated with deploying and managing encryption so they immediately appreciated what we were offering. On average the large customers saw a 75% reduction in the total cost of ownership of managing endpoint disk encryption.

Our mission is to bring endpoint encryption to the masses, and we’re successfully doing these as we have thousands of customers who are small businesses with 5 or fewer employees.

MO: What inspired you to expand your service offerings to include management and security for mobile phones and tablets? How will this influence the direction of the company in the years to come?

Tim: We have thousands of customers who trust us as a key component of their managed security service strategy, and customer demand drove us to expand our service to include security and management for smartphones and tablets. A comprehensive management console to secure and ensure data security compliance for laptops, smartphones and tablets is a highly desirable feature amongst our customers and partners.

MO: What are some trends in your industry that you’re excited about or think that our readers should be paying attention to?

Tim: The BYOD trend is becoming increasingly prevalent in businesses of all sizes, and companies should openly embrace mobile computing technology since the productivity benefits are substantial. Security concerns vary based off of the needs of different industries, but having at least basic control over devices that contain company data is important. Companies like AlertBoot are positioned to take great advantage of the growing BYOD (“Bring Your Own Device”) trend by offering easy to use and cost effective mobile data security services.

Ease of use is a key component to AlertBoot’s success since that translates to a significant cost savings for our customers when it comes to data security and management. We allow our customers to dedicate more of their time to revenue producing activities.

MO: What’s the biggest risk that you’ve ever taken and how did it turn out?

Tim: I took on over $2M in personal debt to launch the AlertBoot service. I believed in our team, and our ability to execute, and fortunately, that bet is paying off.

MO: Can you expand on how by creating a lot of reusable intellectual property when building the AlertBoot platform it will enable you to leverage that IP for new business opportunities down the road?

Tim: Our customer facing management console contains a lot of auditing and customizable reporting capabilities which has logic that can be applied to other types of businesses. That would give us a big head start when executing on new opportunities. We are currently exploring opportunities in retail and financial services. Behind the scenes, AlertBoot’s cloud and partner management system can be reused for any other type of cloud business.
