Lucinda Cross of Yonkers, New York is a successful speaker, author, small business start-up expert and “mom” who has achieved the work/life balance that every woman dreams of. Lucinda was motivated to start her own business while she was working frantically in the 9-5 corporate rat race, and shuffling her children back and forth to daycare each day. Cross would leave work at 5pm, pick up her children up at 6pm, rush home to feed them, bathe them, and help with their homework and bedtime by 8:00pm. The routine was not healthy for her or her kids, and, spending only 45 minutes of quality time with them each day was not enough. Cross wanted more. She was stressed, overworked and underpaid. The ultimate breaking point was when her boss refused to let her take a day of work when one of her children was sick.
Published in October 2009, Cross’ book Corporate Mom Drop Outs – Women who have traded in the life sentence for a profitable lifestyle will help “wanna-be” mompreneurs everywhere turn their dream of owning their own business into a reality. Written in trimesters, the book mimics the birthing process from inception to a healthy full-term business.
MO:
Your book, Corporate Mom Drop Outs, tells women how to leave their corporate jobs to work from home. Obviously this was, in part, from your own experience but did you tap the experiences of other moms as well?
Lucinda:
Yes I interviewed over 200 women and have placed over 20 different stories from Women who have been successful at running their business and balancing their family.
MO:
Your life, like many moms and dads today, was a crazy repetitive survival routine. How were YOU able to break that cycle and leave your day job behind you?
Lucinda:
I started doing my business as a side job at first so that I could build up my clientele before I left my permanent job. I attended networking events and searched out to find a business coach to help me with the transition.
MO:
Corporate Mom Drop Outs is also a subscription blog. What will users who subscribe find there?
Lucinda:
Subscribers will find success tools for growing their business, marketing their business, a network of successful momprenerus who share their business secrets on how to work on your business and not in your business.
MO:
You’re also a speaker and hold a radio show. Tell me more about those aspects of your business.
Lucinda:
Yes I love to speak and I speak on topics such as Balancing the Superwoman Act, Pregnant with Power and Potential, and the Mission behind the vision. I am not your average motivational speaker I like to leave my audience with resources and action steps to follow.
My radio show Corporate Mom Dropouts Power Hour airs twice a month on Blog Talk Radio, and I have the pleasure of interviewing different mom entrepreneurs who tell us their story and provide the audience with tips and business strategies to use.
MO:
How is your life different today than it was back when you were working a 9 to 5 job? How has this changed your life?
Lucinda:
I am able to have a relationship with my kids, I am able to have more time for myself and most of all, I enjoy what I do so I am physically and mentally healthy. I was frustrated and aggravated working a 9 to 5. I did not like being away from the kids or many times just too exhausted to enjoy my family. Now I control my destiny.
MO:
What immediate advice do you have for moms that are looking to leave the daily grind and work from home? What are some first steps they can take today to head in the right direction? Here are 3 tips of advice I would give to a mom ready to leave the grind.
1. Do your research. Make sure there is a target for your product or service.
2. Get out of your comfort zone. Begin to attend conferences and networking events, to build a list of potential prospects and check out your competition
3. Find a mentor or a coach. Connect with someone who has achieved the level of success you want, connect with someone who is walking the walk and talking the talk.
