“Persevere, try not to carry any debt and keep your overhead low.”

Patrick Althizer served in the USN 1963-67 aboard USS Midway CVA 41 and USS Hancock CVA 19 as a Photographers Mate Second Class. He has been married 38 years to Jill and has three grown daughters, two that are attending Long Beach State in California.

Patrick started Photo Safari Yosemite Guide services for visiting Yosemite Park photographers in 2009. As a National Park Service approved Guide, he has taken 132 excursions into Yosemite Park and has nothing less than 5 Star Trip Advisor reviews. Patrick was featured in USA Today story in May of 2010 and later aired on NPR. Our client profile is the traveling photographer and their friends seeking expert guidance while visiting Yosemite.

MO: In what ways did your experience in the military help prepare you for operating your business?

Patrick: I was trained at the USN School of Photography in Pensacola, Florida following graduation from high school as a Graphic Arts Major in 1963. Afterwards, served three tours aboard the two aircraft carriers during the Viet Nam era 1964-67.

MO: What advice do you have for other veterans that are considering the path of entrepreneurship and starting a business? What do you wish someone told you?

Patrick: Persevere, try not to carry any debt and keep your overhead low. Stay focused.

MO: What’s the most exciting thing on the horizon for you/your company?

Patrick: This is the fourth year and we now have a following of fans along with some repeatbusiness. The first three years have been  spent getting grounded and a reputation established.

MO: How will you grow the company over the next 5 years?

Patrick: The growth will take place from staying focused on what works and avoiding what doesn’t.
