POP NYC is a full service sourcing, product development, and manufacturing company offering private label, promotional and retail capabilities. The firm has worked with over 40 brands and companies across the United States, Canada, Australia and the Middle East.

MO: What inspired you to launch your business?

Gina: Our business was inspired by already being in the business and seeing how things were run internally- although so many things were seemingly done right on the outside the internal things were a complete disaster! Company morale was low, employees were unhappy, scare tactics and timelines were crazy! I felt there had to be a better, easy and softer way to do this! I thought if things could be a little different internally wouldn’t we be even MORE successful on the outside? I thought it was worth a shot to try!

MO: What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner and how have you met that challenge?

Gina: Our biggest challenge was leaving my old company with NO contacts. I did not feel it was ethical to leave and take contacts. We started from the ground up – in less than 1 year due to our hard work, my personal contacts in the industry, our sheer luck, and my reputation and persistence we were able to secure large scale orders of over 300K units, collaborate with amazing young companies, grow with them, provide our knowledge to help others and help existing companies in our industry build a better product behind the scenes. For the first year of our business I took no salary and my business partner supported me completely! For that I am eternally grateful!

MO: Do you consider yourself successful and by what means do you measure success?

Gina: YES! I think we are successful. We have built our business up from 0 to something in a short period of time. In this industry it often takes a long time to court clients and get them to work with you. We have been blessed to have great relationships with our clients- I thin this is because we have excellent communication, great products and a great outlook on every project we do…

MO: How do your competitors view you?

Gina: We have been fortunate enough to collaborate with some of our competitors to help them on projects that they were having problems with. We are solution oriented and have been able to bring that reputation to the industry. So we have heard that they would “not want to be in a meeting with us!” which we take a as great thing! We have heard that we are smart, savvy, kind and resourceful. We are happy to share our knowledge and make sure we see our clients vision through. Often a client has to simply describe their vision and we know what they want- we can turn it into a reality after 1 sample or mock up.

MO: What’s the biggest risk that you’ve ever taken and how did it turn out?

Gina: The biggest risk I have taken was opening this business. It has not been without its trials and tribulations – I think it has turned out wonderfully!
