With ZoomShift, managers gain total control over their schedules by putting staff availability, request-offs, and shift swaps in one place. BusinessInterviews.com: Where does your passion for building easy-to-use software come from?
Jon: We admire the guys from 37signals. Their book, “Getting Real”, and their product Basecamp, inspired us to create easy-to-use software. We believe in their principles, and apply them to building our business and software everyday. We use a lot of software at ZoomShift, and we get excited when we find solutions that actually make our lives easier.
BusinessInterviews.com: I was checking out your blog and was wondering if you could share of your great ideas on ways to increase employee productivity?
Jon: Employees can be more productive in many ways. One of the main ways employees can become more productive is to batch tasks together—addressing related to-dos all at one time, instead of responding to each one as they come in. This shift can result in a huge boost in productivity because you are able to concentrate on one type of task at a time.
BusinessInterviews.com: How important is social media to your overall marketing strategy?
Jon: We use social media to connect with people. We don’t see it as a primary growth channel, but as a way to assist our search marketing efforts. We love being able to reach out to influencers on Twitter to discuss potential content partnerships such as guest blogs and interviews.
BusinessInterviews.com: What have been some of the advantages of being a self-funded and self-taught startup?
Jon: The biggest benefit to being self-funded is you get to decide what your day is going to look like. There’s freedom knowing that you can set the pace and schedule for how you want to grow as a company. Being limited actually helps us focus on the things that are working, and not feel pressure to chase the numbers.
BusinessInterviews.com: How do you plan to keep the momentum going?
Jon: We plan on keeping the momentum going by focusing on the 10% of things that drive 90% of growth and return. Everything we are doing is tested and then automated. If we see a good return, we will invest more. It sounds simple, but that is the approach we are taking.
