BusinessInterviews.com: What inspired you to launch your business?
David Greenberg: A frustrating moving experience. I was working as a lawyer and moving just a few blocks within New York City. As a corporate attorney, I didn’t have much free time, so I sat down one Saturday and made a list of all the companies and accounts I’d need to update with my new address. I called the list my “Update List.” Even though I was only moving down the street, I still had about 20 companies on the list. After learning that there was no app or service to help accomplish these updates online, I knew there had to be a better way than calling/emailing each of these companies individually. Out of that frustration, Updater was born.
BusinessInterviews.com: What issue does your core product help solve and how so?
David Greenberg: Americans move an average of 10-15 times in their lifetime, but the process has never been particularly easy. Updater turns the act of moving – a formerly painful and disjointed process – into a helpful, efficient, and enjoyable experience for those going through it.
Hundreds of the most prominent real estate companies in the US (from real estate brokerages to multifamily and relocation companies) offer Updater’s products to streamline the moving process for their clients. By offering Updater, their clients and residents are able to seamlessly transfer utilities, update accounts and records, forward mail, find a moving company, and much more – all within a personalized, curated platform.
BusinessInterviews.com: What’s the biggest risk that you’ve ever taken and how did it turn out?
David Greenberg: Quitting my stable job as a corporate attorney to launch a relocation tech start-up. I worked my entire life to become a lawyer and ultimately landed a job right out of law school at one of the most respected firms in New York City. Just a few years later, I left my job to start Updater. My friends and family thought it was crazy, but I knew I was onto something big. Luckily, it turned out to be a great decision.
