BusinessInterviews.com: What inspired you to launch your business?

Michael McDevitt: My wife and I are busy people. When we learned the wonderful news that we were going to become parents, we had a desire to create the same family dinner experience for our children that we had growing up with our families. To make this possible, we had to find a realistic way to cook healthy meals at home. I learned of the new meal kit companies that were out there and tried them all out. We liked the fact that it cut out the grocery store, however, they lacked the healthy variety that matched our eating style and they often took too long to prepare. I sought out to create a business that provided a product that fit our lifestyle. We built Terra’s Kitchen around the pillars of Convenience, Health, and Sustainability.

BusinessInterviews.com: Do you have any recent success stories that you’d like to share with our readers?

Michael McDevitt: We recently made the move to include products from other brands in the Terra’s Kitchen menu offering (Siggi’s Yogurt, Suja Juices, Michelle’s Granola, Revolution Foods, and Convergence Coffee). It has been amazing and our customers are loving it. We have learned of so many amazing companies and the stories behind them. With so many choices out there, they appreciate the curation process we complete to put our stamp of approval on the products we offer.

BusinessInterviews.com: What issue does your core product help solve and how so?

Michael McDevitt: The 6 p.m. question that seemed to stump my wife and I every night, “What’s for dinner?” We help provide people with delicious, easy to prepare, and healthy dinner options. We take out all the hard parts of shopping and chopping, and give you time back to spend on the things that matter most.

BusinessInterviews.com: What’s the most exciting thing on the horizon for you/your Company?

Michael McDevitt: It is clear that e-comm grocery is becoming a huge demand from the consumer base. It is such a fun time to be in our industry, as it seems that there are major innovative events happening on a weekly basis.

BusinessInterviews.com: Where do you envision your company in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?

Michael McDevitt: With all the events and transactions occurring in e-comm grocery these days, it is tough to see too far out. You plan for the long-term, but must react and adjust to where the world is moving in the short-term. I do see the line that is drawn between retail and e-comm grocery fading away. While they require very different skill sets to succeed, we are serving the same customers.

BusinessInterviews.com: How do your competitors view you?

Michael McDevitt: I like to think that with so much growth in our industry as a whole, that there is a rising tide effect happening. Success for a direct competitor can drive awareness and growth to the meal-kit industry, which consequently helps us.

BusinessInterviews.com: What’s the biggest risk that you’ve ever taken and how did it turn out?

Michael McDevitt: I left the safe and stable world of Private Equity to become an operator and owner in the world of small business. Other than getting married, it was the best and most rewarding move I have ever made.
